A Recipe for Daily Living
Have you ever thought about having an anthem or personal creed to live by? Something to remember on those days when life is full and blessed, but oh so hard, all at the same time?
When my oldest two children were very young, my husband became sick with a life-altering autoimmune disease. Between trying to be a strong & encouraging wife for my husband, trying to be the best mom I could be to my two children, and working to earn income for my family with a home-based business, living my days by a scripture was something I needed, but I didn’t know where to start. I so desperately needed Jesus all day long! I needed His strength. I needed a reminder of how to tackle the adversity with Jesus by my side.
While I was talking to my Grandma Sally one day, she shared with me that she lives by 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. She calls it her “Recipe for Daily Living.” It’s what guides her as she lives every day for the LORD.
Here is what 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says in the NIV translation,
“16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
So let’s break this down…
Grandma Sally’s Recipe for Daily Living
-Rejoice Always
-Pray Continually
-Give thanks in all circumstances
Now, I’m not perfect. But from the moment my Grandma Sally shared this with me, it has been my goal to live by these Bible verses every day.
Thankfully, my husband has been in remission for the last 5 years and God has walked with us through so much. He has never left us and He has provided what we have needed.
I’m not sure what you’re going through as you read this blog post. But I do know that God is faithful. I do know He will lead us through the fire and I do know He never leaves us. His plans are great!
You may be going through a difficult time and rejoicing doesn’t seem doable. I get it. But pray through it until you can rejoice. Make a list of everything you are thankful for. Pray and thank God for all He has done in your life. Give Him the hard stuff. He wants it. Give thanks for everything you can think of.
It may not be easy, but adapting these verses as your own “Recipe for Daily Living” will shift your heart towards gratitude, praise, and prayer. What a beautiful way to live, focusing every day on Jesus.
