Mayberry Days
Our family loves the Andy Griffith Show!
We watched the entire show from start to finish in 2019!
We love everything about the show- from the hilarious Barney Fife, to all of Opie’s lessons learned, Aunt Bea’s great cooking and how Andy Taylor always gets it right!
The black & white episodes are our favorite! We love them way more than the colored episodes! If you’ve seen them- do you agree? Which is your preference?
When we were watching the show from start to finish last year, I told Josh we should go on a homeschooling field trip to Mount Airy, North Carolina. That is the town that the Andy Griffith Show is modeled after, and it is Andy Griffith‘s birthplace!
When I started to do research, I learned of a special event that happens once a year called Mayberry Days! Much to my surprise, it was just a few weeks away!
Last year, we made our first pilgrimage to Mount Airy, North Carolina for Mayberry days the last few days of September. We had a blast! We got to see the statue of Andy and Opie, we toured the Andy Griffith museum, and we walked all around town and even got to see Barney’s police car.
This year, we counted down the days when summer started! We couldn’t wait to go back! The event happens every September, and you can find more info here.
This year, it rained all day when we went- but that was actually awesome! With the restrictions of Covid-19, and having our new baby with us this time, a rainy cold day was actually an incredible day to go! The crowds were very light & we got to do everything we wanted to do!
We saw the Andy and Opie statue, went through the museum, we got to ride in Barney’s police car this time, AND Deacon & Grace got to participate in the youth trivia contest! It was amazing!
And let me tell you about this youth trivia contest .
The winners were AMAZING.
They knew answers to the most detailed questions- I was truly in awe! I’ve watched The Andy Griffith Show my whole life & couldn’t answer half of them .
Deacon & Grace each got a handful of questions correct & I was so proud of them, I could burst!
Most of all, the youth trivia contest was FUN! The adults made it a blast for the kids & they were so complimentary of their effort- especially when they got a question right!
Carson can’t wait for the youth trivia contest next year! He’ll be old enough to participate and he has his answers ready! He loves everything about Andy Griffith!
On a side note: during the trivia contest, it was raining pretty hard. I had my baby boy wrapped in my Tula, and we were under an awning to protect us from the rain. I had his baby blanket wrapped around him, and he was snug as a bug in a rug! But- three different people offered me their chairs & umbrellas. Everyone was just so kind! It really meant a lot to me. So- if they ever read this- thank you again!
If you ever have a chance to attend this sweet event, you gotta go!
We hope to see you there next year!
